Adhur Shanker Alva left an indelible mark as an Indian politician, lawyer, and Member of Parliament. Representing the Mangalore Constituency in the 3rd Lok Sabha, he was a dedicated member of the Indian National Congress.

Born into affluence in a Tulu-speaking Bunt family of landlords, Alva hailed from the Adkathabail family of Kasaragod. His educational journey took him through St. Aloysius College (Mangalore) and Madras Law College, where he earned the degrees of B.A. and L.L.B. A widower for much of his life, Alva took on the role of a single parent, raising four children with resilience.

Beyond his political endeavors, Alva was a distinguished lawyer practicing in Mangalore. His commitment extended to various social, cultural, and sporting organizations, showcasing a multifaceted engagement with his community. Successfully contesting and winning the Assembly election from Puttur Dakshina Kannada, he ascended to the position of Cabinet Minister for Co-operation during Devaraj Urs’s tenure as Chief Minister.
